India's 5G and 6G Future

India’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has launched the Bharat 5G Portal. After successfully rolling out 5G services in the country at a rapid pace, the Indian government is now preparing to work on the next generation of telecom technology. In other words, India is now looking towards 6G, and the Bharat 5G Portal has been launched with the aim of conducting research in this direction.

The portal was launched by Dr. Niraaj Mittal, Secretary of the Department of Telecommunications, at the Bharat Telecom 2024 event. On this occasion, Dr. Mittal said that India currently has over 1 lakh startups, and the country’s reliability has made it a desirable partner for other countries in the development of 5G and 6G technology.

Benefits of Bharat 5G Portal

  • The Bharat 5G Portal is a one-stop shop for all things 5G and 6G in India. It will provide a single online platform for businesses, researchers, and other stakeholders to connect and collaborate.
  • The portal will also help to promote innovation and intellectual property protection in the telecommunications sector.
  • The portal includes a registration portal for future technology experts, in collaboration with PANIIT USA. This will help to identify and nurture the next generation of telecom talent in India.
  • The overall goal of the Bharat 5G Portal is to strengthen India’s telecommunications ecosystem and help the country achieve its goal of self-reliance.

6G in India

India is already on the path to 6G. Last year, the country’s first 6G lab was launched in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The lab was built by Finnish tech company Nokia. The goal of the lab is to accelerate the development of fundamental technologies and applications based on 6G technology. It is also expected to support India’s global 6G standards.

Benefits of 6G Technology

It promises to deliver ultra-fast speeds, ultra-low latency, and massive connectivity. These capabilities will enable new and innovative applications in a wide range of sectors, including:

  • Transportation: 6G can be used to create a more connected and efficient transportation system. For example, it could be used to support self-driving cars, real-time traffic management, and smart city applications.
  • Healthcare: 6G can be used to improve the delivery of healthcare services. For example, it could be used to support remote surgery, telemedicine, and personalized medicine.
  • Education: 6G can be used to create a more immersive and interactive learning experience. For example, it could be used to support virtual reality and augmented reality applications.
